FYM23 | Learn to Negotiate

How to get the offer that you are wanting for? Learn the art of negotiation.

If you are a freelancer, what you have to learn is negotiation. Being a digital nomad means working at your own pace and managing your time like you are the boss.

But freelancing seems popular nowadays and there's already a competitive market that makes other freelancer lower their rates — as in very low.

With 2-year experience of writing, I learned to value myself as a freelance writer. I do not lower my rates if I know that I can give a satisfaction to my clients.

On the other hand, don't let your pride and ego take away your client. Learn to negotiate.

Learn to negotiate

When it comes to your rate, never work for very low rate if you deserve a higher price. Work based on your skills and experience.

But there are times that there are clients that will negotiate with you — sometimes, they will make you cheap.

Never agree with it (unless you are a newbie who are gaining experience) — depends on the situation.

Instead of going lower than your rate, negotiate with it. Here's what I do:

I get the average of the two offers. For example, if you are commonly working for $8/hour and your client as for a $6/hour offer, you can get its average.

8 + 6 = 14/2 = $7/hour.

This way, you will meet in the middle and turn the tables into a win-win situation.

NEVERTHELESS

If your client offer $2/hour and get its average:

8 + 2 = 10/2 = $5/hour.

Do you think it is worth it?

Well, you can answer it.

Always learn to negotiate and meet in the rate that both of you will be happy.

All the best,
Laurence
